Amazing Sys Info for Windows
Topic: My vote.....

This shareware SIW (http://www.gtopala.com/) is a very useful utility. In addition to showing very detailed info about your computer, it can retrieve product keys in case you have misplaced them. There are a few other programs which retrieve product keys but they cost. You can call Microsoft and have to pay per minute that after verifying tonnes of info for them. This software is cool. Install it on a system where you have software installed, get the product keys and then you are ready to install the software on other computer using the keys. Of course, it is expected that you have original media matching the product keys and are not using this to install software on many machines. For responsible users this is a great tool. Only thing to be careful about this tool is that it puts all your hidden passwords etc. under "Secrets" and that is for anyone to see once the program is up and running. On Windows Vista this feature does not seem to work and that is good.

Big thanks the writer of this software who must have spent umpteen number of hours to write this and made it available for free. Other programs with half the functionality cost anywhere from 25 to 50 bucks.

Coinstar -- convert coins to e-certificates without commission
Topic: My vote.....

Coinstar is a company which provides coin-to-bill conversion services. You see those big machines in many superstores etc. You just pour your coins and it prints out an equivalent coupon for you to cash or buy things at the store. That has been a nice feature to get rid of all those pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters that accumulate when we do cash transactions. But, in the past, Coinstar has charged a commission of around 9% which can be expensive.

No more if you are willing to use e-certificates from many retailers such as amazon.com, Starbucks, Timberland etc. No commission charged. You get a gift certificate for the whole amount which you can use to buy whatever you want, say at Amazon.com or elsewhere. It's neat little enhancement to entice people back to those coinstar machines. It works quite well. Coin counting is fast and efficient. You just pour coins into a bin and slide them into the counter. Then when done, it spews out a receipt with the gift card which you can validate on the web sites of the retailers.

Do not underestimate how much money you may have in coins. I today generated 2 e-certificates amounting around 385 dollars. That's quite something. Since I shop at Amazon.com quite a bit, it works for me.

Good show Coinstar and retailers who have partnered. You certainly have created a niche.

Btw, Coinstar is a publicly traded company. Stock has done very well over last few years although quite expensive from P/E standpoint.

Cheers!

Agile Estimating and Planning
Topic: My vote.....

Agile Estimating and Planning (Robert C. Martin Series) [Paperback]
By: Mike Cohn

A lot of books on agile do a lot 'talk the talk' and fall short on 'walk the talk'. This book is rich from practical standpoint and is indispensable for all interested professional especially if you have the hard job of selling agile development to your management.

Mike Kohn, as the author, is simply a master in teaching 'how to' behind whole agile development methodology. He does not take any particular fancy to any one methodology ( be it XP or SCRUM or Crystal) but drives towards an unified view of the principles and delivers practices that can be put to use directly.

Agile does not ignore planning. It is just advocates adaptive planning and execution. Knowing the fact that you can only foresee to the extent, it provides a formula ( literally a math formula to determine your visibility in literal sense) for how often to plan, how to refine, how to setup a release plan, how to engage the team and whole gamut of release management from agile standpoint.

One book that should be read before jumping on agile bandwagon before putting 'pedal to the metal'.

The book is one of the finest books on agile in the world that has been flooded with many books on the subject. This stands out as a real jewel.

Cheers!

Six sigma green belt training from www.6sigmastudy.com
Topic: My vote.....

Six Sigma Quality Program has become a very respectable quality improvement program all over the world after renowned companies such as Motorola, Allied Signals,GE embraced it and made it a defacto corporate-wide initiative. Motorola has publicly acknowledged that it has saved more than 13 billion dollars directly due to its focus on six sigma quality. Jack Welch, legendary CEO of GE, who does not buy fads, thoroughly researched this program and was so influenced by it that he championed it at GE.

Concept 6 Sigma is very simple at the core. Reduce the variability, deliver consistency. Excellent goal for manufacturing, call centers etc. Not sure how it has been used in software engineering. Probably how effectively defects are fixed in a software release may benefit from six sigma.

A nice framework of knowledge is built around six sigma to help practitioners similar to PMBOK by PMI. Different "color" belts are awarded to practitioners with different levels of proficiency with six sigma program. Starting place is "Green belt". A person with "Green belt" is expected to "talk the talk and be in a position to learn to walk the walk". Different organization offer six sigma certification on completion of certain hours of classroom or self study followed by a test to measure fundamental understanding of six sigma.

For PMI certified professionals, getting certified in Six sigma is a good thing to do. Six sigma embraces PMI provided project management framework to run a six sigma projects. Thus, PMPs who develop increasing knowledge of six sigma make themselves very useful to organizations which embark on six sigma. Depending upon further interest, one can continue to gain further expertise and become PMP equivalent in six sigma by acquiring "black belt" which is the ultimate certification is six sigma. Very demanding certification as one has to have done a lot of practical and real life six sigma work.

www.6sigmastudy.com provides a very economical and effective way to get green belt certification. The course and examination cost only USD 225. Course material is very useful. To get all material, you probably have to scour dozens of books. Certification process is simple but not something one can get without putting adequate effort. Every module has a test at the end which one has to pass with 80% before moving on to the next module. Although there is no restriction on number of times you can take a test or no controls on being able to "cheat", the amount of time it forces one to go over the study material itself makes one get at least surface level understanding of six sigma. After all, that is the goal for six sigmas.

This web based certification is very well administered. Once you pay the fees using PayPal, the course become available and you can complete the certification anytime within 3 months. Realistically it takes only 3-4 days at the rate of 2-3 hours per day. The case study and test based on case study is better attempted on new day.

This web site is the sister company of www.pmsstudy.com. I have a lot of good things to say about them as well. Their sample tests for PMP certification are probably one of the best. Very close to PMP exam. Once again very reasonably priced compared to other training programs. PMSstudy.com also has several course which provide PDUs once you become a PMP. Overall and indispensable resource for PMPs and wannabe PMPs.

Another good thing about getting six sigma certification from this company is that you get 25 PDUs that you can use to meet professional development and continuous learning requirement for PMPs.

Cheers!

Thumbs up for http://www.inkjetsuperstore.com
Topic: My vote.....

Received good service from http://www.inkjetsuperstore.com.

Was searching for a place to buy printer ink cartridges. This store had good prices. Their customer service shone when I had to make some changes to the order. When you order online, it is many time hard to change it without confusing the seller. But, with this company, it was a breeze here. Just sent an e-mail to make the change and ship the order accordingly. Did not really hope that it would be taken care of and order would be shipped correctly. But, I was pleasantly surprised to get an e-mail confirmation from customer service to that effect, a new bill with prices correctly adjusted to reflect changes and the products shipped in no time and on my door steps in less than a week. That being shipped from the west coast.

I have not yet used the cartridges. So, can not say anything if the inexpensive cartridges cut the mustard. But, it was refreshing to see an Internet business operating smoothly and having some intelligent people who can understand customer requests and process them accordingly. With so many businesses full of workers whose stacks would overflow if you ask them to do little different than their prescribed regiment. Try "water without ice" instead of what they are used to "water with no ice". And you will cause the stack overflow.

Thumbs up for - http://www.inkjetsuperstore.com

Practical Product Management
Topic: My vote.....

There are not many training courses or training companies which impart training in Product Management.

Product Management is not covered in adequate detail in MBA programs. Even those who specialize in 'Marketing' get to learn more about 'Marketing' which is only a piece of the product management. For any role in software development, exposure to product management can be helpful because what we develop or help get developed is a product or service which is owned by someone with designation of 'product manager'. It does not matter if anyone understands what that role is meant to be.

Pragmatic Marketing a niche training organizations which provides several training courses meant for product managers. The most useful and generic one which aims to provide good basic foundation in 'real' product management is 'Practical Product Management'. This 2 day course taught by experienced trainers is a good place to start and depending on your interest you can choose to do additional courses in requirements, marketing etc.

Pragmatic Marketing also offers a certification which tests applicants on the basics learnt in their course. It is a certification that is gaining credibility in the market. With everything being equal, employers certainly prefer someone with such credentials because that shows that the person has gone an extra mile to augment his/her knowledge.

I took PPM course recently in Boston taught by Steve Johnson of Pragmatic Marketing, Outstanding class and outstanding instructor. There is a lot of material which is covered. So, it's fast paced class without unnecessary role plays or similar such rituals which many such soft training programs suffer from. Steve Johnson as an instructor is excellent. He draws from his diverse experience and delivers good training in his inimitable style packed with a punch of humor. 2 days well spent.

Certification test is also well developed which aims to test fundamentals learnt in the course.

Course material is good. Not bulky. Meant for frequent referring. Many pointers to where to find additional information. Tonnes of templates. A lot supporting material on their web site.

All in all a great training program. Worth the money. These classes are held all thru the US often. Try if you want to get a head start in product management. Even if you do not do product management you can teach a thing or two to people who are doing something totally different in the name of 'product management'. That's the tragedy of software engineering. Anyone can become anyone without formal training. Try that in electrical engineering or mechanical engineering. Unless we develop a sense of professionalism in software engineering with clear focus on development, product management, project management, our field is going to continue to much maligned. But trends are indeed changing. It is heartening to see employers insisting on PMI certification for project managers and SCRUM certification for all those who claim to do agile development and other technical certifications for technical experts. Way to go...

Cheers!

Become a venture capitalist using www.kiva.org
Topic: My vote.....

Many times we would like to finance worthwhile causes but the amount of money required in millions. So, we look and others who already have money are financing start up companies to make more money. Many times our interest to finance it also to finance some meaningful enterprises but what we get to finance, even when we get rich, are once again commercial interests whose aim is to make more money and nothing else.

How do you feel about lending (I say lending not donating) small amount of money to someone who wants start a small business? We probably are interested. But, is there a way to systematically do it? Now, yes there is.

www.kiva.org is provided a neat platform to micro finance. Micro finance should be familiar term with Dr. Khan of Bangladesh winning this year's Nobel prize in economics for his landmark and pioneering work in micro finance which revolutionized the lives many small time vendors in Bangladesh.

For more information, visit www.kiva.org. There you would find many simple business plans of several needy people who can put your $25 to good use to setup small businesses. www.kiva.org has done a great job of providing systematic channel to take your small contribution, pooling it up with contributions from similar minded people and then channeling the money to one or more business people via it's tie up with local financial institutions. These amounts are lent as loans and you can track how money is put to use, what is happening to the business, how far the business has returned the money and so on. Like any venture, some of the businesses you finance may fumble. That's ok as all that you lose may be $25 for a business and not more. But, on the positive side, the satisfaction you may get is something that can not be put in words. It is helping someone start making a honest living and if business does well, it may change their lives and the lives of their children for far better. You are making a difference.

This idea appealed to me tremendously. I have been big supporter of charities and donate a small amount to my favorite charities such as children international. But, what is important to many of us is to be able to see some tangible and precise way of how it is making any difference if any. Children international lets you sponsor one or more children for a monthly contribution. But, it is hard to say that your money really made a difference as the money is pooled with many big time donors and distributed to needy children. But, with kiva, you are lending money and not donating. If the person does well and returns your money, you can recycle it and lend it to some other needy person.

Hope that micro finance develops really well especially in developing countries. Small business owners there can take even a small amount such as $500 and make it really big at least for themselves.

So, what is stopping you from becoming a venture capitalist or angel investor? You can say in parties that you too are a venture capitalist :) and seriously providing capital to some meaningful venture. Is there any more meaningful venture than to help someone get a foot hold in life?

Btw, lending money is breeze with their seamless integration with PayPal. PayPal has to be commended for waiving transaction fees. So, all your money goes to the business person.

Cheers!

Lara Dutta and her generosity
Topic: My vote.....

Lara Dutta is a former Ms Universe and a leading film actress.

Not many times we get to hear good things people from movies. Conventional media is only interested in raunchy gossips, fashion and other sensational stuff. Very few people look at movie celebreties like one of us - good, nice, caring fellow human beings.

Recent gesture by actress Lara Dutta is really praise worthy. Story is short and sweet. A little boy was admitted for treatment in B'lore hospital. Family was poor. The family had raised money thru fellow community members. Since my family contributed a little, I know this first hand. The hospital had put posters requesting for help. Lara Dutta happened to visit the hospital. Saw the posters. Was moved. Visited the boy on her volition. Spent time with boy and family getting know them, decided to sponsor the whole treatment (tab was close 2-3 Lakh rupees) and left. She did all this without any fanfare. She could have tried to get as much media mileage out of this. But, none she went for. At least I did not come to know about this in any news paper. A person who was involved in fund raising efforts posted this info to our community yahoo group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/havyaka/) and that's how we got to know about her act of generosity. Isn't this really nice? Ms.Dutta deserves kudos.

We have seen so many celebrities making all promises and then reneging on them. But, in this case no words but only action.

Way to go Lara Dutta. Thanks for saving little boys life and more importantly saving the family from going to financial problems. FYI, boys parents are school teachers in near Surathkal in DK, Karnataka. This is one nice act which is bound get a lots of good karma for actress and everyone.

Olympus WS-300M 256 MB Digital Voice Recorder and Music Player
Topic: My vote.....

Recently I wrote about the best practice of recording your meetings as an effective practice to capture good information from many meetings when note taking is not easy.

This is a nice little digital voice recorder for such a purpose. Very happy with the purchase.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BJ1UAE/104-6416664-9007946?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=172282

Very sensitive voice recorder. Just place it in the middle of the table and it can record even remote sounds quite well. In the highest quality mode, it can record up to 8 hrs, that is more than adequate to require transferring recorded files to your computer once a week. Transferring is also a breeze. No need for cable etc. Comes with built in USB plug which goes right into your computer port. Once plugged in, the recorder shows up as another drive like your pen drive.

Files are recorded in WMA format. Since many editing programs require MP3, you may have to use another software utility to convert if you need to edit for marking segments of important things in the meetings such as decisions, action items, etc. But, there are many freeware tools available to help with that. I use one from Jodix.

Built in speaker is also a great help to transcribe notes. Comes with headphones too. If speaker is used, batter seems to drain off quickly. Otherwise, one AAA battery seems to last for quite long.

You can record all your meetings, listen when required, miss nothing and take your management to next level. Or listen when you can not sleep worrying your projects :)

Cheers!

Logitech Quickcam for Notebooks Pro
Topic: My vote.....

Very nice web cam.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BBYH8O/ref=pd_rvi_gw_1/104-6416664-9007946?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=172282

It's amazing to see how basic video conferencing has evolved over last few years. Two years back it was not that fun to use web cams with instant messaging services. But, today with web cameras like the one mentioned here, it's really fun to keep in touch with others.

This webcam is suitable for laptop users. Similar web cams are available for desktops too. This camera has a built in microphone. So, you do not have to work with messy headphone/microphone gear on top of your head or struggle with external gear. Very sensitive microphone. Automatic face tracking really works. Just set it up and it will track for the best picture quality. With broadband connection and this camera video conferencing is a reality. Sometime due to network issues, voice quality can be a problem. In that case, you can use regular telephone for voice. Being able to see other party makes such a big difference while having conversations that you would want to have this.

1.3 MP is adequate. Although on eBay found some web cams with much higher resolution. The fact that they are not available easily on prominent retailers such as amazon.com may indicate something about their quality and/or usefulness.

This web cam also can record video and take still pix. The software that comes along with this to do all that is really user friendly.

Great little toy to keep in touch with friends and family back in India and elsewhere. Can be used for business communications too as long as you do not mind dressing up to take your con-calls when working from home:)

Little pricey but worth it. Face tracking itself is worth everything. Otherwise, there are other cheaper ones and you would spend half your time adjusting the position and focus and other half time with messy cables that the fun is over.

On small concern is that the camera heats up and it can be felt. So, unplug when not is use. The camera and the software is good enough to qualify for real plug and play.

Sometimes online retailers offer good bargains. Buy.com discounts $30 if you make this as the first purchase using their VISA card. Buy.com treated me very fairly and honored the discount that I had not used for close to 2 years. Thumbs up to them also.

Cheers!

Do you hate to wake to up the screaming sound of alarm clocks? do you like to wake up naturally as though first rays of sun are slowly working on your retina to provide a natural wake up call...then try this...this is a neat piece of device which packs conventional dawn simulator with some other features....

It is especially hard to wake up during winter months when there is no sun on most of the days.....falling asleep second time around 4-5 AM is disaster as next time you try to get up at 6-7 AM, your sleep would be disturbed and your work day gets affected....if you can get required hours of sleep but want to get up naturally with gradually brightening light simulating sun rise....this is a device....perfect for cold dreaded new england winters and other times too....do not expect this device to help much if you are not getting your quota of regular sleep....

iPod 30 GB
Topic: My vote.....
Apple 30 GB iPod with Video Playback White

iPod - what an innovation...probably only Walkman from Sony had created so much buzz in the recent history. One big value add for other companies from iPod is the ability to develop many other interesting accessories which work well with iPod and provide additional functionality.

Apple certainly developed a killer device and a whole array of apps go along with it. iTunes software makes it so easy to use.

Podcasts are a big value. There are so many good podcasts on all sorts of subjects. They are all well categorized in podcast directories such as PodCast alley etc.....it is a great way to enhance knowledge in any specific area.....top schools such as Wharton, Darden, Baylor etc. put a lot of good info and make them available as podcasts.....get ivy league education for free.

all in all a great little device if you want to just enjoy music and entertainment or use it for more creative purposes.....

Apple has been quite stingy in terms of providing basic accessories....does not even come with wall charger....buy a wall charger, car charger, cassette tape adapter or FM transmitter to play in the car....you are good to go....best saying once I heard regarding how best to use commute time was -"make your car a virtual university"....iPod serves that purpose perfectly.

Bit pricey....close $300....but worth every penny....

Nice back up utility. Back up files into universal zip format. Can be scheduled etc. Nice and fast. Just make sure that you save the back up some where safe:) (Need to remind myself as well).

Only thing I would have liked is to create different back up profile. For example, there are files we want to back on daily basis and there are some which need only occasional back up. That is not easily possible although you can do that by creating and deleting set of directories at a time.

Tasktoy
Topic: My vote.....
http://www.tasktoy.com/ - is a nice lil online time management utility which provides access to your TO-DO lists from anywhere on the net....

This was mentioned in one of the recent issues of "Software Development" magazine (www.sdmagazine.com) in the editorial....in day to day life which is only becoming faster and faster, time management is very important to retain any remaining sanity...David Allen is a famous time management and productivity guru...it is said this tool was developed by someone who was impressed by his techniques.....

i like the tool but i have my own system. it's does not offer any other benefit than web access....

start making TO-DO lists and see how it makes your life simple....

following are my techiniques that have worked so well for me. take them or leave them as you find fit....

-always carry a small notebook and pen/pencil everywhere. keep noting TO-DO actions as and when anything comes to mind...do not worry much abt when to do them

-at work maintain notebook....at the beginning of each day, open up a new page and start making notes, action items etc....for easy identification tag to-dos as AI and notes as N and meeting minutes as MM and you can use the same scheme for other things....

- devote some time at the end of the day to review your pocket book and office note book....now is the time to transfer data to something which allows you to organize data better than a notebook does....

- have as many spreadsheets as you want to track your to-dos....mine are all project based and one general to-do for all non-project based....personal to-dos continue to stay in the pocket book....as work gets done, just cross it out.....

- spread sheet at the minimum should contain following columns, action item desc, owner, open date, target date, closed date, status (open, closed, cancelled etc.), comments....

- do the same thing at meetings that you hold, there it may make sense to capture the action items right on the spreadsheet that is ideally projected for everyone else...to make things lil faster and easier, you can write some simple macros to fill in default values for dates. for example, in my case, macros fill in today for open date, today+3 days for target date as default and status 'open'....the reason you want to capture action items right on the spreadsheet during meeting is to raise awareness among people...once people see their name against an action item, they normally tend to do a better job of following up...just natural....

- notebooks are better for rest of the day because they are much faster for quick data capture...the time saved there justifies their transfer into softcopy later in the day for further elaboration...somwhow electronic organizers, hand helds stylus etc. do not seem to come close to fierce scribbling one has to do to capture ideas as they cruise thru.....moreover, many ideas that come outside of meeting are not very organized to allow systematic categorization instantly....

- once action items are transferred to spreadsheets, you can sort them by target date in ascending order or sort by target date and priority....make note or print out top 5-6 things you need to get done and pin it out to your soft board and go home.....

regardless of what is best, making to-do lists is probably THE most important productivity tool ever invented....my belief is "if it is recorded, it gets done....sooner or later which is better than never"

just start making note of everything that you have to do, you will start seeing how it helps reduce stress, anxiety, worry, restlessness etc......this is the first step....planning, scheduling etc. comes later....sometimes writing down even trivial activities seems so redundant but make it a practice till you come up to speed.....

David Allen's books talk about these in much methodical way. all of us organize our to-do lists in one or the other way...why not do it methodically and save time to have some fun and retain sanity for lil longer?

happy hours (of produtivity)!

Donate with discretion - http://www.charitywatch.org/
Topic: My vote.....
holiday times...also when people feel generous....generous ppl remembering to donate....as they in India 'donate but donate to needy and truly derseving'.....you can use http://www.charitywatch.org/ to see if your target organization measures up.....my fav children internation certainly not in the top 20 but has a decent grade so i am ok and will continue sponsoring 4 kids that i have been doing for years....

many ppl wonder how much one should donate....diff ppl will have diff formulas but the formula that's been in use our family for generations is 1/64 of savings every year....that is get the amound of your total earnings minus expenses divide by 64 and that's what is minimum....more better.....this normally goes for religious donations to temples etc....on top of it one is encouraged to donate in cash or kind.....

didn't christ say something like "more shall be given to those who already have.....and even lil that they have will be taken from those who have lil"....be generous and see how things start making sense for you....

one thing all scriptures etc. come down to is "see your welfare in the welfare of the larger good...if you work for the welfare of the whole, your welfare is already included in it"....this made so much sense to me once i started understanding the benefits of unity and evils of separation that forgetting oneself is the sure fire way to feel more secure.....dig in a lil deep and see when you feel most insecture.....invariably it's when stakes are high and you are worrying about the outcome....more so when one wins and other loses.......feel united...feel secure.....

happy holidays!
