Daya Nayak - hunter being hunted
Topic: Underworld
Ghosts from the past seem to have caught up with Daya Nayak who once was the poster boy of Bombay's's much talked crime branch. His relentless pursuit of underworld and delivering extra judicial punishments in the form of encounters had made him so popular that at least 3 films were made on his life story. Kagaar, Ab Tak Chappan in Hindi and Inspector Daya Nayak in Kannada.

Now ACB hounding him, he has already been suspended on the charge of amassing assetts beyond his means. Old ghosts like journalist Ketan Tirodkar's complaint, old dusting report from his from 1996, some laborer name Mahesh Gowda(oh no) daring to come back after Nayak made him leave B'bay for good in lieu of sparing his life etc. all have come together.

Truth must somewhere in between. Let the truth prevail. Gala time for B'bay tabloids.

Cheers!

Lisbon court extradites Abu Salem, Monica Bedi
Friday November 11 2005 08:18 IST

Reuters

LISBON: One of India's most wanted men, suspected of involvement in bombings that killed 260 people, was extradited by Portugal on Thursday, Lusa news agency reported.

The suspect, Abu Salem, was handed over to Indian authorities along with his wife Monica Bedi, Lusa said citing a judicial source. Indian police accuse Salem of being a key associate of Dawood Ibrahim, whom they say planned and financed the 1993 bombings in Bombay.

They say the blasts were retaliation for religious riots triggered by the destruction of an ancient mosque in 1992.

Without citing names, the Judiciary Police said two Indians had been handed over to Indian authorities. The extradition was authorised by a Lisbon court, the statement said.

Salem has been held in Portugal since he was arrested with his wife in 2002 for fake documents and resisting arrest. A Portuguese court sentenced him to four-and-a-half years in prison in November 2003. Bedi was sentenced to two years in prison for using false documents.

Cops get don who almost got away

Express News Service

Mumbai, May 12 The Mumbai police today caught up one of their oldest and most ruthless adversaries. Sadanand Natu Shetty alias Sadhu Shetty, one of underworld boss Chhota Rajan’s most notorious hitmen in the ’80s, was killed in a police encounter in northern Mumbai this afternoon.

Shetty, who was involved in several murder and extortion cases, was gunned down along with an associate, identified as Nagaraj Mudaliar (35). The two were reportedly planning a hit job on a city-based hotelier when they were intercepted by a team led by Inspector Vijay Salaskar at around 4.10 p.m. They were declared dead before being admitted to hospital.

One of the most colourful characters thrown up by Mumbai’s badlands, Shetty started small, as a bootlegger in Chembur. This migrant from Karnataka soon hit the big league, settling scores with rival gang members.

By the early ’90s, as Mumbai’s underworld began to change character, Shetty too tried to alter his image and morph into an ‘activist’ of sorts. He returned to his native Paniyur village and formed the Tulu Sena, to lobby for the cause of Tulu-speaking people. But the ghosts from his past never stopped gunning for him: in 1998, Chhota Shakeel’s hitmen, led by Shaikh Mastan and Rashid Malbari, tried to break into his house in Mangalore. They failed, but two of Shetty’s associates were later shot dead at Penambur beach. His past caught up with him in the end near a BEST power station on the Trombay-Panvel Highway, not too far from the place where he first embraced the world of crime.

Majeed Memon shot at, escapes unhurt
By: Prasad Patil
July 4, 2005

Senior lawyer Majeed Memon was shot at by unidentified attackers as he got into his car outside his Bandra residence this morning.

The advocate, who is handling several bomb blast cases dating back to the 1993 serial explosions in Mumbai, escaped unhurt.

The incident happened at about 9.15 am as Memon along with his son Zulfi, stepped out of his Ashiana building behind Bhabha Hospital in Bandra, to go to his office in Fort.

According to Zulfi, the two attackers riding a motorbike stopped some distance away, shot at Majeed and fled immediately, even as building security guards chased them.

‘‘At the moment we are all shocked. But advocate Memon will talk to the media during the day,’’ his son said.

Mumbai Police Commissioner A N Roy said that a police constable assigned for Memon's security returned fire, injuring the attackers.

Advocate Parvez Memon, who works with Majeed, said he was provided police security only last week, following information from the Intelligence Bureau that there was a threat to his life from the undeworld. ‘‘But he (Majeed) apprehended a threat from the police themselves,’’ Parvez said.

Ravi Poojari, one-time associate of gangster Chotta Rajan, claimed responsibility for the attack on Memon. Poojari told a television channel that he was upset over Memon defending the accused in bomb blast cases.

Memon met Maharashtra Director General of Police Dr P S Pasricha after the incident and demanded a thorough probe into the whole episode.

Last week, Memon was called to the Crime Branch office by Deputy Commissioner of Police Dhananjay Kamlakar and told about a threat to his life and a constable was assigned for his protection.

D invites Rajan to wedding

July 1, 2005

Dawood (right) is seeking to
pacify Rajan (left), who is incensed at the murders of aides like Balu Dokre and Rohit Verma at the hands of the D Gang
Dawood Ibrahim is believed to have invited his nemesis, Chhota Rajan, to his daughter’s wedding, according to information obtained by the Mumbai police. Dawood’s daughter is to marry the son of former Pakistan cricketer Javed Miandad.

However, sources say Rajan has turned down the invite.

According to police sources, Dawood is sitting on a double-edged sword. “Ever since Dawood was declared a global terrorist by the US, he has been under tremendous pressure from Pervez Musharraf and the ISI,” said a source.

On one hand the ISI is pressuring him to leave Pakistan and on the other hand, Rajan is after his life.

“Rajan seeks vengeance after his aides like Balu Dokre and Rohit Verma were killed by Dawood,” said a source in the Mumbai police crime branch.

Dawood therefore wants to offer the olive branch.

“Dawood feels that Rajan may be pacified if he’s invited to the wedding,” said the source.

No invitation cards

Sources close to the underworld also say that no invitation cards were printed from Dawood’s end.

“All invitations were strictly telephonic. A certain code is given to each invitee intimating them about the venue. An usher at the venue will determine if the person is to be let in,” said a source.

Dawood meanwhile is believed to have booked many five star hotels in Karachi.

The wedding itself is expected to be in a no claim zone, such as a country with no extradition treaty with India. “The guests will be housed in the hotels and will be taken to the venue in a chartered plane,” said the source.
The guests

The Mumbai crime branch is keeping vigil on the visas of people who might be invited. Twelve people from Bollywood, elite businessmen and politicians who were invited, have already left the country.

New York Mafia leader gets life
By Paul Keller
BBC News

The head of one of New York's most powerful Mafia gangs, Joseph Massino, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for his role in eight murders.

Massino, the head of the Bonanno family, had already pleaded guilty last year to seven murders.

He admitted on Thursday to ordering another killing - that of a fellow Bonanno family member, Gerlando "George from Canada" Sciascia, in 1999.

Massino, "the last Don" could later take the stand against ex-associates.

Massino will go down in US history as an old-style Mafia boss who later became one of the highest ranking informers against organised crime.

It is his decision to co-operate with the police that has helped Massino, 62, to avoid the death penalty for the mob killing in 1999.

Insider betrayal

It is all a long way from the godfather figure who took over the Bonanno family in the early 1990s and restored order after it was infiltrated by an FBI agent in the 1980s.

The story of federal agent Joe Pistone was turned into the Hollywood thriller "Donnie Brasco" - the pseudonym used by the undercover agent.

In his heyday, Joseph Massino was a strict enforcer of the Mafia's Cosa Nostra code of honour.

Known by fellow members of the Mob as "the Last Don", he oversaw operations from his restaurant, CasaBlanca, in the Queens district of New York.

His strong sense of discipline helped keep his family in business while the heads of New York's other four Mafia families were put behind bars.

But in the end, he too was betrayed by one of his own - in this case, his right-hand-man, Sal Vitale, who testified against him at his trial last year.

D-company victim Rahul has a heart for poor

Bangalore, June 18: It could have passed off as any other event where underprivileged children are handed out free textbooks or uniforms. But what set this one apart, was not the guests, but the benefactor.

On Saturday, students of Lourdes High School in Ulsoor received two pairs of free school uniforms from Lok Ayukta N. Venkatachala and Archbishop of Bangalore, Bernard Moras at a Parents Day function.

Their benefactor Rahul Fernandes, who donated 3,200 sets of school uniforms, has a tragic past. His father, a no-nonsense IPS officer in Mumbai, was shot down by the D-Company. Rahul, who was the only eye-witness, was adopted by the St Josephs Indian High School, Bangalore, where he completed his schooling.

Even now, when he visits Mumbai occasionally, he is escorted by armed policemen because of the threat to his life. Tears well in Rahuls eyes as he speaks about his father. An entrepreneur with businesses in three countries, he wants to adopt half a dozen schools in Bangalore to provide free midday meals. "We have provided 300 borewells for villagers in Maharashtra and Karnataka". He has a dream: "Someday in the near future I would like to support farmers in rural India."

His mother Leela Fernandes, who went into a coma for six months after sustaining bullet injuries in the same shoot-out in which her husband was killed, died at the Bowring Hospital in the 1980s.

Rahuls own life has not been easy. He was shot at twice by Dawoods men during the time the case was on trial. Even today, his life is highly protected and he avoids strangers.

Mumbai, May 22: Gangster Balu Dokre, an alleged henchman of Chhota Rajan gang, was shot dead in Malaysia by unidentified gunmen last night, police said.

Police said they had received information that Dokre was shot dead but denied any knowledge about who could be behind the killing.

Sources, however, said Dokre could have been targeted by gunmen hired by rival gangster Chhota Shakeel.

Dokre was a dreaded shooter and was wanted in the killing of Nepalese MP Mirza Dilshad Beg who had alleged links with Dawood Ibrahim.

Sources said Dokre was also sent on mission to kill Ibrahim but it had to be cancelled due to some reasons.

There are nearly 43 cases of murders and extortions registered against the gangster. (Agencies)

MUMBAI: Circa 1998, the city witnesses 101 shootouts involving the underworld, and several bystanders get hurt in the crossfire.

In the next three years (1999-2001), a whopping 250 'dreaded' gangsters are gunned down by squads led by Pradeep Sharma, Vijay Salaskar, Praful Bhosale and Ravindranath Angre.

Can these encounter specialists be credited with saving Mumbai from the mafia?

Thane police commissioner D Sivanandhan, who was then joint commissioner of Mumbai's crime branch, says the underworld was not crippled by encounters alone.

"There were several other factors and, under my supervision, it was a multi-pronged strategy," he says, adding encounter specialists have gratuitously been put on a pedestal and turned into "larger than life" heroes.

Sivanandhan provided TOI with statistics, showing that between 1999 and 2001, detention of gangsters under the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities (MPDA) Act was the highest—1,290.

The police had then seized 1,433 firearms, including several 9 mm pistols and AK-47s from gangsters, 212 persons were
detained under MCOCA.

D-Company rides again, cops fear reprisal
by SOMIT SEN
Tuesday, May 03, 2005,NEW DELHI: For a long time now, he's been lying low in Pakistan. But the uneasy peace that's been prevailing among Mumbai's mafiosi is set to be shattered again. The Don, Dawood Ibrahim, is set to strike back with a vengeance — literally. He's hell-bent on settling scores with old rival Chhota Rajan.
And he's willing to shake hands with anybody who can help him achieve this goal.

In the last few weeks, he's reportedly been busy wooing potential lethal weapons, including Ejaz Lakdawala, Guru Satam, Hemant Pujari, Ravi Pujari and Fazlur-Rehman.

Of these, Lakdawala is the 'rising star' of Mumbai's underworld.

The police are already calling him the new Abu Salem after the gangster incarcerated in Portugal who targeted the film world.

" Ejaz bol raha hun, jaan pyaari hain to pachas peti ka intezaam kar (This is Ejaz speaking. If you value your life make arrangements for Rs 50 lakh to be paid)": two leading actors and two producers have told the police they have received such threats.

A police officer said Lakdawala, who is suspected to be in Nepal, is trying to establish his presence in Mumbai by targeting not only Bollywood but travel agents, traders and businessmen as well.

"Unfortunately, some of the city police officers think that the underworld has been crippled as there have been no major shootouts in Mumbai," a senior IPS officer told TNN.

"They should not be complacent as the mafia is in the process of regrouping...

... The purpose of the amalgamation is to create a single largest underworld group in Mumbai to finish the rival Chhota Rajan gang and to enjoy a monopoly," he adds.

The Chhota Rajan gang itself is showing signs of resuming activity again.

The gang had allegedly planned to gun down diamond pasha cum-Bollywood film producer Bharat Shah last November.

The plan was foiled following early intervention by the crime detection branch of the Mumbai police.

While the Rajan gang is eyeing big targets, its boss himself is learnt to be in Dawood's cross-hairs.

Police sources said the process of creating a "tacit understanding" between Dawood gangsters and those in smaller gangs has been going on for the past six months.

"Dawood has sent out a clear signal to the smaller gangs: the enemy's enemy is always a friend."

His message has worked since a majority of those with whom Dawood wants to ally are former Chhota Rajan aides.

"Satam, Pujari and Lakdawala fell out with Rajan in 2000 and formed their own groups. Dawood is now wooing them," said a crime branch officer.

At present, the Chhota Rajan gang is left with three second rung leaders — Balu Dokreand Bharat Nepali, both of whom run extortion rackets from abroad, and D K Rao, a robber-turned-gangster.

"Dawood's objective is to finish the Rajan gang by eliminating the trio. This is one of the primary reasons why he is teaming up with smaller groups," a police officer says.

Rajan was once a trusted henchman of Dawood, but he parted ways after the serial blasts in Mumbai in March 1993 in which more than 1,000 innocent lives were lost.

The blasts were masterminded by the D-Company.

Rajan fled to Malaysia and formed his own gang, targeting Dawood aides responsible for the blasts.

Dawood, on the other hand, has been gunning for Rajan's head for the past 12 years.

In September 2000, his cronies had almost zeroed in on Rajan at an apartment in Bangkok, but Rajan escaped with bullet injuries in his chest.

Rajan now operates cautiously, even his second-rung lieutenants don't know about his exact whereabouts.

This is because one of his own trusted gang members had tipped off Dawood, leading to the attack in 2000.

According to police sources, Rajan is now in Europe.

But why has Dawood been lying low?
Said a senior officer, "Dawood has protection from Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence in Karachi. He is lying low as there is pressure on Pervez Musharraf from the US which has declared Dawood a global terrorist."

But Dawood seems keen on regrouping his gang in Mumbai and strengthening its activities.

Till then, the smaller gangs will continue to operate on their own.

For example, Satam has extortion rackets in areas like Bhoiwada and Kalachowkie; Lakdawala is trying to get a foothold in extortion in the Hindi film industry; Fazlur-Rehman targets businessmen and traders.

They may not be content to act as vassals to Dawood in the long run, but in the short term, at least, they might be willing to ally with him against Rajan.

And if that indeed proves to be the case, then all hell could break loose.

NEW DELHI, APRIL 25: The United States has placed wanted drug dealer Iqbal Mamen alias Iqbal Mirchi on the list of specially designated narcotics traffickers.

The list released by the US Treasury Department named Mirchi, who is also called Iqbal Merchant, in the category of persons whose entry is blocked to any part of the United States.

The list provides all the four dates of birth being used by Mirchi in his various passports. His passport numbers issued from India and from the United Arab Emirates have also been put on the list.

Apparently, Mirchi had been trying to gain entry into the US which is believed to have prompted Washington to study his case thoroughly and then blacklist him. He is said to have been making attempts to set up a business in the US.

India had secured a red-corner notice against Mirchi, a resident of Mumbai, in 1994 after the police unearthed an illegal factory in Pune where 1,600 kg of Methaqualone which is used to make mandrax tablets was recovered.

Mirchi then fled India to avoid arrest has been shuttling between the Gulf countries and Europe.

Mirchi, who had to leave Dubai in 2003 following the murder of underworld don Sharad Shetty, has no direct connection with the ‘‘specially designated global terrorist’’ Dawood Ibrahim but security agencies said that some deals had taken place between the two in early 1990s.

It is alleged that Mirchi sold nearly five million mandrax tablets between February and September in 199

MUMBAI: The Chhota Rajan gang had planned to gun down diamond pasha-cum-Bollywood film producer Bharat Shah last November. The plan was foiled following early intervention by the crime detection branch of the Mumbai police. Shah's name, which was kept under wraps by the police for more than five months, was revealed to TOI by police sources on Wednesday.

Four persons were arrested by the crime branch and sophisticated weapons were seized from them along with photographs of Bharat Shah and bits of paper bearing the registration numbers of his vehicles. Shah was informed of the plot and necessary precautions were taken by the police. He continues to get police security even today. When contacted by TOI on Wednesday, Shah confirmed that he had received extortion threats from the underworld. "The callers had threatened to kill me if I didn't pay up," he said. The producer declined to disclose the amount demanded, but sources close to him said it ran into several crores.

In the first week of November 2004, Unit No VI of the crime branch in Chembur had been tipped off by a well-cultivated informant that four shooters of the Chhota Rajan gang were holed up in a tenement in Girgaum.

Acting on the information, officers and constables staged a secret operation on November 8 by a crack team which swooped down on the premises where the gangsters were holed up. The team found three notorious shooters, Vinod Yadav (39), Vishwanath Jadhav (43) and Jagdish Shetty (30), with sophisticated weapons — a .45 bore Colt automatic pistol with seven live catridges and two .38 Smith and Wesson revolvers with several catridges.

CBI to quiz Nagma over alleged underworld links

The CBI will question Bollywood actress Nagma in connection with her alleged nexus with the underworld, even as the agency claimed that it had evidence of involvement of Dawood Ibrahim in the Gutkha case allegedly involving gutkha baron Rasiklal Manikchand Dhariwal.

"The name of Nagma figured in the confessional statement of one of the accused arrested by Mumbai police in smuggling of gutkha machines to Pakistan. This is for her benefit only that she should come out clean and cooperate with the CBI," CBI Director U.S. Misra told reporters in New Delhi today.

He said all the people named by Jumbo, the accused arrested by Mumbai police, will be questioned by the CBI.

Referring to the ongoing investigation in the gutkha case, the CBI Director claimed that Dhariwal, Goa gutkha owner J.M. Joshi, underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and his brother Anees Ibrahim "were in touch with each other".

"We are probing all angles in this case," Misra said.

BANGALORE: Rowdy Srirampura Kitty was murdered by an armed gang in a residential area in Bapujinagar on Saturday. Kitty (52), who was attacked with swords and choppers, died in hospital a few hours later.

This is the second murder of a rowdy in gang fights in the city in the last five months. 'Bekkinkannu' Rajendra was hacked to death by rivals in November last in High Grounds.

Around 7.30 pm on Saturday, a small-time rowdy Dabba Ravi and three youths from the area were extorting money from Kitty's acquaintance Yashodamma, who allegedly runs a brothel. Police said she informed Kitty over telephone about the extortion and sought help. Meanwhile, the gang took Rs 1,000 cash and snatched Yashodamma's jewellery.

A few minutes later, Kitty came on a motorcycle and confronted the gang. An altercation broke out between the gang and Kitty. Tension gripped the area after the miscreants attacked Kitty with lethal weapons and fled leaving him in a pool of blood outside Yashodamma's house. He had been stabbed in the stomach, legs and hit on the head with swords and choppers.

The police shifted him to Victoria Hospital from where he was taken to NIMHANS in a critical condition. He succumbed to injuries around 1.30 am.

Byatrayanapura police have registered a case of murder following a statement by Kitty. Police are questioning the suspects, Ravi, Kirthi, Kumar Somashekar and other locals.

Krishnoji Rao alias Srirampura Kitty, involved in murder, extortion and robbery, was rowdy-sheeted by Srirampura police on October 10, 1976. He was aged around 24 then. He gained infamy after carrying out the murder of rowdy Balaram in the Central Jail in May 1995 and also rowdy Rajendra's murder.

Kitty had led a gang which murdered two rowdies from Basaveshwarnagar and chopped their bodies into pieces before dumping them in Thippegondanahalli dam.

A police officer said Kitty, who had reigned terror in areas like Srirampura, Malleswaram and Magadi Road, was known to be associated with rowdies including Mani Bharati, Kotwal Ramachandra, M.P. Jairaj, Jedarahalli Krishna and Bekkinkannu Rajendra.

Meanwhile, the body was handed over to family after post-mortem in Victoria Hospital. Tension prevailed in Srirampura during the funeral procession taken out amid heavy police bandobast on Sunday evening.

Who is the Nagma in the gutka storm?
Two actors, both from Tamil films, both with ties to Bandra (and Chennai), both furiously denying links to don Dawood's brother Anees. Over to the CBI.
Express News Service

Mumbai, February 19: Abhinetri Nagma Anees ki rakhail hai, ye mujhe maloom hai. Anees ne ek bar uske liye bhi hawala ke dus lakh rupiye mere pas bheje the, woh maine usko diye (Actor Nagma is Anees mistress, this I know. Once Anees had also sent to me hawala money of Rs 10 lakh for her. I gave that to her).

That was the sentence buried in the confession of Jamiruddin Rasool Ansari (alias Jumbo)--an 18-page confession his lawyer now says was given under duress--that sparked off a storm of denials from two Nagmas.

Now in the custody of the Mumbai police, Ansari is alleged to be a key link in the case of the mafia links of gutka barons Rasiklal Manikchand Dhariwal and J M Joshi, both now evading arrest warrants and Interpol alerts somewhere in Dubai.

Ansari (36), who owns a sea-facing flat in Mahim, said he had delivered the Rs 10 lakh to actor Nagma in Bandra in 2000.

The problem is both the Nagmas have--or had--ties to Bandra, and both are actors.

Only the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which has now taken over the case will be able to decide which one is the Nagma named by Jumbo.

In advance of those investigations, both the Nagmas are strenuously denying their involvement.

The more well-known of the duo is the oomphy Tamil star, once linked with Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly. The Congress hastily pulled Nagma--her real name is Namrata Sadhana--from campaign duty after the confession became public last week.

A furious Nagma said it was a case of mistaken identity, she had never met Anees (Dawood's elder brother), and the confession referred to another Nagma from Bandra, whose mother Tabassum was arrested for arms possession in 2000.

But on Friday night, the Nagma she blamed surfaced in a phone call to Newsline from Chennai.

``I've unnecessarily been pulled into this controversy,'' said Nagma Tabassum Khan. ``I am based in Chennai, how can anybody link me (to the confession) when I have not been to Bandra for five years?''

Khan said: ``The last time I was in Bandra was when I was 14 years old, studying in Mount Mary boarding school. I used to live with my mother in Versova. My mother, Tabassum, left India in 2000, and she is presently in London.''

Police sources confirmed that Tabassum had been arrested from Versova, something her daughter--who moved to Chennai after acting in only one Hindi movie, Boond--did not deny.

Nagma had a reverse journey: she moved to Mumbai after achieving fame in Chennai. She pointed to her address as defence. ``I don't stay in Carter Road (where Jumbo said he delivered Rs 10 lakh), Bandra. I stay at Mount Mary, Bandra.''

The money and the Nagma question will be just one of the many tangential questions that the CBI will now have to examine.

The Mumbai Police have been accused of going slow in the entire case, including not questioning Nagma or anyone else named in the confession since it was given to Deputy Commissioner of Police Amitabh Gupta in October 2004.

Gutka man Joshi emerged last week to give a television interview from Dubai in which he accused former partner Dhariwal of dragging him into dealings with Dawood.

Both the barons are accused of having supplied gutka-making machinery to Dawood's operation. Dawood's gutka brand Fire is a rage in Pakistan.

Abu Salem to be deported from Portugal
Topic: Underworld
If this really happens then first time a high profile gangster is finally coming home.

Abu Salem rose very rapidly in D-company specializing in terrorizing Bollywoood. Gulshan Kumar murder, attack on Rakesh Roshan, Rajiv Rai and extortion calls to other high profile people made him the undisputed mob boss for bollywood.

He is supposed to have rescued Monica Bedi from losing contracts she had signed during the beginning of her career which never took off anyway. She got linked with him and got married. Of course, she too is with in Portugal. This is an illustration how desire to get into Bollywood messed up the life a very affluent girl who grew up in Norway. Beware, all you wanting to go to Bollywood.

Abu Salem had another way to terrorize his potential victims. He used to have his friends in B'bay crime branch gun down some of his gang members right near the house of a famous personality. Of course, many of his moles in B'bay crime branch were only too happy to do so. This is how the famous encounter of 4 youths on their way to kill Manisha Koirala were gunned down in an 'encounter'. Of course, then onwards his extortion calls became more authentic.

Google on Abu Salem and read how concerted effort from FBI, CBI and other international agencies resulted in tracking Salem and Monica and catch them in Lisbon after a drammatic movie style chase in downtown Lisbon.

Cheers !

Chhota Rajan not arrested: Interpol

TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ SUNDAY, AUGUST 22, 2004 04:22:39 AM ]

MUMBAI/DELHI: Interpol on Saturday denied the arrest of underworld don Chhota Rajan in Jakarta, although rumours of his arrest had surfaced on Friday.

However, the CBI, which represents Interpol in India, said that Rajan had been holed up in Indonesia.

Police sources in Mumbai said that following the rumours, Rajan had called up his family in Tilak Nagar on Friday. He is also believed to have fled Indonesia.

Indian intelligence agencies had recently tracked down a hawala transaction of lakhs of rupees from Mumbai to Indonesia.

"The money was being sent by some Rajan lieutenants and was meant to reach Nana (as Rajan is called by his boys)," a source told TOI on Saturday.

Rajan apparently needed the money to "bribe certain cops" in that country. Apart fromIndian intelligence agencies, Rajan's movements are closely monitored by Pakistan's ISI.

In fact, some sources suggest that the rumours of Rajan's arrest were deliberately spread either by the rival Dawood Ibrahim gang or by the ISI, which is said to control the Dawood gang ever since the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts.

Officially, though, senior policemen are denying any knowledge of Rajan's arrest. "I have no information about Rajan's arrest. I came to know about this rumour from mediapersons," said Mumbai police commissioner A N Roy.

An internet website and a couple of TV channels, quoting unnamed sources, had flashed the news of the gangster's arrest.

Rajan, who had parted ways with Dawood after theMumbai blasts, has been on the run ever since the attack on his life by Chhota Shakeel's men in Bangkok in September 2000.
