Topic: Quotable Quotes

"Write to express. Not to impress."

"Listen to understand. Not to respond."

How do you write to express? Write like Mark Twain. Simple style and concise prose. Twain said "writings of famous writers is like wine. mine is like water. everyone drinks water." Twain also had advised some youngster to keep his simple style when he had come to ask for Mark Twain's suggestions as how to improve his style.

Regardless of style, there are many other things that we can practice to improve the effectiveness of our writing. With information overload that we all experience, it is very easy for recipients to miss our message. We all get so many e-mails everyday and we know which e-mails are easy to read and act on. We love people who write such e-mails. What are some of the secrets of effective business writing? Let's limit to business wiring.

1) Write in small sentences

2) Use a lot of white space

3) Use double spacing all the time.

4) Indent appropriately especially when natural hierarchy exists (such as problem and possible causes, symptom and reasons)

5) Get to the crux ASAP

6) Greetings, apologies, BS, suck up etc. are needed. But, keep them at the end. Let people end with a happy note.

7) Use SEER format. SEER format is normally used for writing reviews. It is equally useful for other memos too. It involves dividing your writing into four distinct parts - 1)Statement 2) Explanation 3)Example to provide better explanation 4) Review (or summary at the end)

8) Use bold, underline, italics etc. very sparely. If you leave a lot of white space and indent properly and use right fonts for headings and sub headings, bold and underlines are not much needed.

10) Where possible, get the verb as early as possible. Always write in active voice. This ensures that verb appears ASAP.

11) Use bullets, numbers liberally. How often we have gone into a meeting with some document and there is a long list everyone is struggling to come to a common understanding (third bullet from the top. No, No, I meant third from the bottom. Numbering avoids this.)

13) Use tables, graphs, pictures liberally. On graphs, please do explain axis clearly.

14) Limit business memos to 2 pages at the most.

15) Do not let a section run into more than 2 pages at the most. If a section runs into 2 double spaced pages, you can easily break that into several sections.

16) Keep the reader in mind

17) Some people learn by reading and some people learn by listening / speaking. Do not send memos to people who learn by listening/speaking. With such people, spend time and then summarize in a brief memo. Everyone is happy.

To be an effective communicator, we need to listen well. Listen with a quiet and attentive mind. It is said that for every minute we speak, we better listen for five. Listening is not hearing. It's okay to take time to respond. This will free you to listen when you are supposed to be listening. We fear that we have to respond as soon as we hear anything remotely objectionable. Keep in mind that acknowledgement is not agreement. In fact, every one should expect that they are acknowledged and not automatically agreed. If the other party takes your acknowledgment for agreement, it is their problem.

It is not only important to listen but also let the speaker know that you are listening. Make eye contact as much as possible. Use effective body language as nodding, smile etc. Avoid body language which upsets or intimidates the speaker. Speaker may hide much from you if you come across as hostile. 'Poker face' is good if it can help to make the speaker comfortable.

Lincoln said - "if you are silent people may think you are idiot. by speaking you will remove any doubts." Not that we do not have anything meaningful to say but in general people speak more than listen.

One of the best quotes on silence and listening is -"I can speak of only what I know. If I remain silent and let others speak, I know what they know."

Pass your words thru 3 gates. First gate, is it true? if not send it back. Second gate, is it kind? if not send it back. If it passes these two gates, then next gate is to ask if it is necessary? if not, you do not have to send back always. Sometimes to keep social interactions going we can speak words if they are true and kind.

Boredom
Topic: Quotable Quotes

"[S]he refused to be bored chiefly because she wasn't boring." by Zelda Fitzgerald

Are we responsible for whether we feel bored or not?

Another saying is - you don't like to do things not because they are boring. Things become boring because you don't like them.

If we give some thought to this, it does seem to start making sense. How often something we found dreadfully
boring to begin with turn out to be something that we cherish and feel proud to have produced it? Normally, we can think of some document we had to write or a paper we had to turn in for school. Next time when it happens, if we document how that happened, we will see that there is a pattern or a couple of patterns.

One pattern that is not that useful is being under pressure. That is the pressure of time or some other external source (such as customer, boss etc.). This does not produce classics although it may have forced you to complete the tasks.

But, think of the other pattern. That normally goes like this. With great difficulty, you garner enough strength to start the first step. It is not unlikely that you drop from it few time only to come back and start from the beginning with more and more agony. After few such false starts, something changes and the product that you need
to produce starts taking shape. If it is a document, you are pounding away. You are not typing one sentence and staring at it for 10 minutes only to discard the document and start afresh. Also, some coffee may help. So, you
take a break too. No, here you are producing at best. You are not able to type as fast as your brain is cranking out ideas. You may end up doing a marathon writing session. It is not unusual to see people 'in mood' not leave their
chairs for hours. At the end of one such session, you would see that you have accomplished a great deal. The product seems to have become something we can continue to evolve further without frustration or lack of ideas.

How did it happen? We do not ask this question many times. It is important to dissect this process once at least so that we can capitalize on the insight we develop. If we have to sum up the experience in one sentence, it is TIME.
More time you allow ideas to ferment in your subconscious mind, better work is produced. So, take your time. Start as early as possible to give yourself enough false starts. In way, there are not false starts at all. They are your
attempts to get fermentation start on the best footing possible. If you produce something under pressure, you will not have the luxury of fermenting your ideas, you may just get back the mixture next day without any flavor or
content. Your work does not produce "kicks".

We have to always remember 'slow and steady' wins the race. Has the topic gone from boredom to something
else? Not really because many times our boredom is closely related to certain specific tasks that we must accomplish. Unfortunately the task that we have to accomplish does not come to us naturally and it is not one of our core
strengths. In the same time it is also not something that we can not do. It is one of these things that we all have such
it-is-not-my-favorite-but-I-know-I-can-do-decent-job-if-I-apply-myself kind of task. We all have had subjects that we did not like in the school. Nevertheless, we passed and in some cases, we may have also excelled. Same here.

One thing that may help is to pay more attention and apply more concentration to things that do not come to us naturally. This will help us detect pit-falls early and consciously. This will enable us to guard against dropping the
tasks that we have begun. This may not make it any less painful. But, we will probably remember to come back and pick it up where we left off after 15 minutes of break rather than 15 days of hiatus.

Cheers!

Neck
Topic: Quotable Quotes
What are two most noticeable things about the neck of the tortoise?
1) Tortoise can move only when it sticks its neck out
2) It is also most vulnerable when it sticks its neck out. It probably takes 10 time more effort to harm a tortoise when it is in its shell than when it's neck is sticking out.
So, we need to stick our neck out to move ahead. This is to mean that we need to take some risks to make progress. Of course, it does expose us to risks and we may be vulnerable to attacks. But, unless we stick our neck and put a stake in the ground on issues, we will remain where we are. "Even if you are on the right track, you will be run over by the train if you do not move." The most common of all trains is something called 'TIME' which keeps running over us for every action taken or not taken.

Churchill had a nice saying about necking out. When he was making his case for uniting against Germany in world war two, French made fun of him that he would be jumping up and down like a chicken whose neck has been hacked off. Churchill said "time will tell who will neck and who will chicken." Churchill necked and became immortal for saving England.

Gita - Tagi and Sri Ramakrishna's wisdom
Topic: Thought for the day
Sri Ramakrishna Pramahamsa was famous for explaining even complex spiritual issues using simple analogies and anecdotes.
His comment on the essence of 'Gita' (Bhagvadgita) is simply great. He said that one can understand the meaning of Gita merely by repeating Gita, Gita, Gita. You start hearing 'Tagi', 'Tagi'.....It means 'one who has renounced' or 'one who has sacrificed'. That is the whole essence of Gita, 'renounce and enjoy'.

People and human beings
Topic: Quotable Quotes

"There are too many people, and too few human beings."
Robert Zend

It can be further modified to - "there are too many humans too but only a few
spiritual beings.". I think once Wayne Dyer said "we are not human beings
trying to have spiritual experience. But, we are spiritual beings having
human experience." Once we recognize ourselves and every other life form as
a spiritual being, a lot of separateness goes away and we start seeing unity
between people and also between people and other forms of life. Thinking in
terms of spiritual beings makes us look at all forms of life being same and putting
different casts such as humans, animals, insects and organisms in the drama called life.

Universe & Chinatown
Topic: Quotable Quotes
"It is amazing that people talk about exploring the universe when they can not even find their way around in Chinatown."

No prize for guessing whose quote this is. Who else? Woody Allen.

Woody Allen is known for witty quotes as much as he is known for his idiosyncrasies. He kinda takes a dig at all sorts of people. We run into many such people exploring the universe when they can not figure their way around in Chinatown. Small time money holders trying to make a quick buck in stock market, useless people trying to rise up the hierarchy with a lot of BS and schoomzing, academically dull student trying to impress by dropping the names of all famous universities where he does not have a chance of setting foot in many lifetimes to come. People do all sorts of things to cope up with weaknesses (real or perceived). Most of the time people choose the worst way to make up for their weaknesses. That is to use their weakest attribute. People who get disoriented in Chinatown should not venture to explore the universe. In strictest sense there is nothing wrong. But, when done to cover up, it stinks. Let's not put facades. Let us be ourselves. That is - let us be our "real" selves

Arafat : in the eyes of the beholder / Janet Wallach and John Wallach.
Topic: Books....

Arafat : in the eyes of the beholder / Janet Wallach and John Wallach.

This book is "we report, you decide" kind of biographical book about Arafat. Researched and written well. Authors write in detail about their time spent with Arafat. There are many interesting things to know such as how Arafat used to keep his schedule very secret and how he used to travel relentlessly. In one instance he visited 40 odds countries in less than 3 days.

A lot of information is also commonly in found in other books about Arafat. Authors here take a more balanced look than taking one or the other position. One area in this book that is not touched in many other books is secret back-door negotiations that went between US and Arafat when US denounced Arafat and PLO in public. US had chosen to open secret doors to PLO after US ambassador with his Belgian counterpart was held hostage and killed in Khartoum, Sudan in 1974 (I think). US was upset. But,it was also concerned about minimizing the impact from PLO terrorism. US did not have to take very strong "my way or no way" stand that Israel took. Israel was right because without such a stand, it would have been wiped out being one and only non-Arab state in the heart of middle east. But, US interests were spread much wider and US had to be more pragmatic. So, they chose to deal with PLO. Who was their contact? Notorious, "red prince", Ali Hasan Salameh. Salameh wanted to deal with US because he thought it would bring more credibility to palestinian struggle. However, when CIA tried to make him a paid volunteer for CIA, he got upset and temporarily broke off. He was again in CIA camp. It is said, it was Salameh and his Force-17 commando force that protected US interest in Beirut and other areas. For his services Salameh was treated royally by the US. When Salameh married Lebanese beauty queen (crowned Ms Universe) Gerogina Rizak, CIA arranged for his honeymoon visit to the US as a gift. It was all going well and Israel was concerned about increasing coziness between the two. They were also in a bind. They wanted to eliminate Salameh like they eliminated many other alleged perpetrates of Munich massacre. Since Salameh was serving US interests, eliminating him like others would have upset the relationship between US and Israel. So, Israelis, in one meeting, between CIA and Mossad asked CIA if Salameh was a CIA man. They said if CIA owned up that Salameh was a CIA man, they would not harm him If not, they would. CIA could not own up in black and white because they knew Mossad was only too happy to leak that and embarrass US. So, they squirmed and kept silent. Israelis rejoiced in silence and went ahead with their meticulous planning. Salameh who had survived many attempts on his life including infamous Lillehammer debacle was blown up into bits in a remotely trigger car bomb in Beirut in 1979.

Another section in this book that is interesting is about the love-hate relationship between Jordan's late king Hussein and Arafat. King had silenced PLO in 1970 in what is known as Black September operation in which Jordanian forces drove out Fatah militants out of Jordan. Several Palestinians were killed. Arafat and his cronies had sworn revenge and several Jordanian diplomats were killed as revenge. Even attempts were made on King Hussein's lives. But, he survived but his ministers and ambassadors in several countries such as India were not that lucky. But, in the interest of peace in the region King Hussein made up with Arafat only to be frustrated by Arafat's fickle mindedness during peace negotiations.

Good book.

Infiltration : How Muslim Spies and Subversives have Penetrated Washington (Hardcover) by Paul Sperry

Infiltration : How Muslim Spies and Subversives have Penetrated Washington (Hardcover)
by Paul Sperry

This is an interesting book. People have systematically demonized people following Islam for all sorts of terrorism in all parts of world. More after 9-11. However, no body seems to have done as thorough work as Sperry to make their point with supporting material. It is altogether a different matter if you also arrive at the same conclusion as the author after going thru all the supporting material in this book. You may or you may not. One thing is certain, facts and material in this book certainly disturb for quite some time to come.

Author writes in detail about how Islam has taken stronghold of important institutions in the US and how it can be dangerous. Taking strong hold is common. That's what lobbying is all about. More important question is what do you do after taking such strong interests and develop influence. To what end do you use it. Author creates panic that by taking strong interests and becoming powerful so called Islamic powers are going to destroy America or free world.

Although it is concerning, it is because of free world, author is able to write what he likes and Islamists are able to say and do what they want in free world. Doing anything even remotely close in Islamic countries would result in beheading or some other summary punishment. I think we should take solace and faith in the fact that free world knows how to make sense of propaganda and knows how to separate chaff from wheat.

Best thing I can remember is about one such fanatic who goes by name "Hamja the hook man.". He is a radical islamist in UK. He is famous because he lost one arm in Afghanistan fighting Soviets and has put a metal hook as a make-up arm. With that he looks really devilish. He goes around in UK making vitriolic speeches. He once told a newsman that it is because of free world he is able to say all that he can.

Take solace. There is plenty of goodness in this world. As even a single candle can drive away pitch darkness, goodness even in small quantity can drive away all evil. Like candles, we can light more candles of goodness with original goodness.

And it probably does not make sense to get paranoid about certain religion. Majority may be like that but in free world most of the people are, at the core, are good because free world ensures that transformation of the soul.

Cheers!

The Intelligent Investor: A Book of Practical Counsel (Hardcover) by Benjamin Graham
Topic: Audio Book

The Intelligent Investor: A Book of Practical Counsel (Hardcover)
by Benjamin Graham

Benjamin Graham is called the father of value investing. He was probably the person who systematized the discipline with sound financial framework. Before his works, I think 'value' in value investing was very vague.

Graham served as a professor of finance in Columbia university. He also ran a successful investment operations managing monies of many rich people.

"Securities analysis"- his text book with co-author Dodd is a classic which was first published in 1940's. It continues to see many reprints and editions with little or no change.

I think Graham wrote this book "Intelligent investor" for those people who did not want to or could not understand intricacies of finance but still wanted to understand value investing. In this book, Graham takes out all financial mumbo-jumbo and explains concepts behind value investing in particular and smart investing in general in a way everyone can benefit from.

Graham stresses over and again one thing many investors seem to have forgotten to ask that is "how much?" Without being sensitive to the price and willing to pay any price to a good stock (at least at the moment) is the biggest sin. Even a hot stock with very high growth prospects most of the times fail to deliver adequate returns to justify sky-high price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio.

Graham lays down a strict rule regarding how expensive one can afford to bid for stocks. Normally up to 15 times the average earnings of past 12 years or longer and never more than 25 times the earning. Another important point made is not to attach much importance to projected P/E. Focus on what has happened and ignore projections. Compare this with some high flying stocks such as Google. Google is trading at 67 time its last 12 months earnings. If you use Graham's formula of 25 times the earnings for high growth companies, Google becomes an attractive buy at around 130. We have to wait for quite sometime for that. It can happen if the stock comes down by 50% :)

Overpaying for growth is not a good strategy for investor.

Graham also provides a very nice anecdote as how to withstand volatility of the market especially when the stock that you bought after applying solid value analysis goes down. The analogy used is slightly round about but makes sense. Say, for example, you buy a house for 250, 000. You obviously finance it with a mortgage of say 200,000. Your monthly payment is say USD 2000. Does your mortgage lender care if your house is apprised at say 175,000 after some years because real estate market went down? Probably not because your lender is more interested in making sure that you are able to make timely mortgage payments. Lender will get more concerned if you get laid off and start earning 60,000 instead of earlier income of 100,000. Lender will be concerned with this development even if you are able to meet mortgage payments. Now apply this to stocks. Say you have done solid research on a stock which is trading at say 18 times its earnings and is paying steadily increasing dividends with increasing net income. Stock market which is driven by many irrational emotions of people prices your stock say 10% below the price you paid for without any significant changes to fundamentals. Your company continues to produce good results, pays regular dividends and manages itself well. Should you be concerned very much just because market has priced your stock down by 10% than when you bought? If you are an investor, probably not. You are not going to sell it and take losses. You are going to "buy and hold". When should you get concerned, you should get concerned if fundamentals change or if the stock moves up and become pricier for no good reason. That's the time to sell and take some profit or eat up the loss if you have to.

This books is not for speculators who want to buy and sell frequently to make some money. Nobody has been able to make money consistently by trading in and out of the market. Money in stocks is made by looking yourself as a business owner (which you indeed are) and choosing to become the owner of companies with solid fundamentals and not some phony dot com with fancy ratios such price-to-vision and is trading at infinite P/E (because it has never reported any plosive earnings).

Great book. We do not need more validity for Graham's timeless principles than any other fact that Warren Buffet who is one of the most successful investors of all times is a staunch follower of Graham's principles. In fact, Buffet was a student of Graham when Buffet got his maters from Columbia. Buffet also worked as part of Graham's investment company.

If you read or listen to this book, do share your comments.

Cheers!

In Hostile Territory : Business Secrets of a Mossad Combatant (Hardcover) by Gerald Westerby

In Hostile Territory : Business Secrets of a Mossad Combatant (Hardcover)
by Gerald Westerby

This book is certainly 5 star.

If you love intelligence agency/spy agency stories and want to benefit from the insight of the people working there and take such insight into business, this book is tailor made for you. It takes away mental work we probably would have had to do thinking how I am going to translate all this real combat wisdom to day-to-day success.

Gerald Westerby is the pseudonym of the author. For obvious reasons, he could not use his name. People, from spy agencies, who have used their real names normally leave out a lot of sensitive stuff from their books. Such books go thru strict censorship. Recent book "man in the shadows" by ex-Mossad director Halevy belongs to that category. Totally watered down and blessed by government and his former employer.

The author who is said to have gone to become a famous businessman after retiring from active mossad duty knows how to write for people looking for stuff. The way book is organized itself makes a point or two about the fact that author seems to have become reasonably successful in business. Otherwise, he could not have written so well identifying parallels between his intelligence work and business.

The book is divided into three sections. They are - patience, preparation and persistence. These 3 are certainly necessary ingredients for success. Author narrates many real life scenarios that he was part of under each category. He uses many punch lines and anecdotes to drive home his point.

For example, the author was tasked to meet late Sudanese rebel leader John Garang. Mossad told him to look for an opportunity to meet Garang when Garang came to Europe. The author knowing that Garang never set foot outside of his stronghold in southern Sudan says "given that Garang had not left the Sudan in 20 years, the thought that we should wait until he was in Europe was a bit like waiting for global warming to cook your goose." Point made. Case rested. Author went to meet Garang right in Sudan right under the nose of authorities.

Some other points that author writes with passion which have disappeared from the radar of many managers include planning, silence and concentration. Everyone can do themselves a favor by planning a bit more, shutting their mouth little more and listening more and concentrating on thing at hand than attending to their bling-blings during meetings or while talking to people.

"Silence is golden" - author proves it beyond doubt when they were confronted in Saudi Arabia by an army officer. Even if they had uttered one word, they would have rotten in Saudi jails and died under most horrible conditions. They used presence of their minds and remained silent. Silence makes people uneasy and people use anything and everything to overcome the silence. The military officer who confronted these mossad agents asked them (on his own) if they were people from "National Geographic" and even helped them to transmit secret code out to Mossad. Beautiful story.

Being able to think on your feet is a very valuable quality. This does no mean that you have rush to answer but using this critical faculty is important. Once a Mossad agent was traveling with a fake German passport. It is usual for spy agencies to produce fake passports for their agents which are hard to differentiate. Although the passport was prepared meticulously, the person developing the cover story for the agent had made blunder. Instead of using full middle name, he had used only middle initial (letter H). It is customary for Germans (as mentioned in the book) to use their full middle name in legal docs. So, when this agent landed in some country, the immigration officer was kinda surprised to find a person with German passport with one letter initial than full middle name. He inquired about this apparent inconsistency. Mossad agent thought on his feet and made up a story. His story was that his middle name was "Hitler" and his parents did not want him to be troubled by that name. So, they had chosen to use only middle initial. Delivered with full confidence and convincing body language and immigration officer totally floored. If the initial were to be something else, he would have probably made some other story. This incident is not from this book but is very relevant. I think this one is from Gordon Thomas's "Gideon spies".

Great book. Really hard to find. Out of circulation. Used sell as high as USD 60.

Great read. Hope you will read and comment.

Cheers!

Change
Topic: Quotable Quotes

"Easiest thing in the world for you to be is yourself. Hardest thing for you to be is the person that others want you to be."

This quote should not be taken to mean that we should not change at all. I think what this means is that it is easiest to be who we are and hardest thing is to be someone that others want us to be. I think the value of the quote is in recognizing this fact and to realize the enormous amount of effort that we have to put in to transform ourselves.

One more thing that we observe after some maturity is that harder we try to transform ourselves, difficult it becomes. This is because everything has a rhythm and we cannot alter that. We want to instill many positive habits and we come to realize that we become successful only when the time is right. As far as change is concerned, it is always difficult and it helps to take it easy. It is also true that slow and steady change lasts where as something that we want to change right now does not even if it changes for a short time.

It can be very frustrating to live with limitations and things that we desperately want to change. It may make more sense to do our best to work on the transformation consistently and steadily and hope for the permanent transformation. We can rest assured that it will happen.

It is interesting to observe that anything positive takes long time to happen and most of the negatives take much less time to transform. Take example of how easy it is to get hooked to nicotine or alcohol or gain weight. So, always be on the guard rather than first effecting a negative transformation and then getting all frustrated not being able to go back to where you were.

Transformation should be looked as something that lasts. Trying to transform things, which are bound to change, does not help. All such change is only temporary. However transforming consciousness is what we want to aim for. Aim to transform consciousness for better on daily basis. Meditation is a natural choice for this purpose. Meditation is often compared to a chisel, which chip away everything that is ungodly leaving on our real self. The chisel of meditation when used with the hammer of determination (or will), consciousness loses all ungodly chips and gets sculpted to divine self.

Cheers!

Perfection
Topic: Quotable Quotes

"Aim for stars. But, grab what you can."

"Plan for success and not for perfection."

"Perfection is the enemy of good."

"Fear lurks behind perfection."

There are many such quotes exhorting us to get things done without worrying about perfection. Good enough is good enough. If we pick up any self-help book on how to overcome procrastination, invariably we find that most of them point to the fact that it is people who are sensitive, careful, cautious and with above average intelligence are more prone to procrastination and perfection. It's a sad irony. These people are the ones who have right stuff to get work done. But, they worry so much about the end result that many times they give up or run out of time or get stressed out. Look it the careless, insensitive moron, who starts the thing without much thought but ploughs along regardless of what comes on the way. They are not helped with anything a sensitive and intelligent person can help himself or herself with. Their one and only weapon brute force. It's unfortunate but true that they are the ones ultimately get something done when majority of sensitive souls aiming for perfection, wither away.

One way to overcome procrastination is by time boxing your activity. That is 2 hours for something means that's it. Regardless of how much time you may have, you stop at the end of pre-decided time and take a look at your project and then make conscious decision if you want to spend more time. Also, look at your project as you look at your business deals, customers or anything. On such things you always pay attention to how much you are going to spend in terms of efforts and money and what you are going to get. Same thing applies to your own activities.

Hope we get the stars when we shoot for them. If not, meteors are okay too. Grab as many of them on you way back :)

Cheers!

Blog - second anniversery
Hey, today is second anniversary of this BLOG. Can't believe that what I thought was a passing FAD lasted two years and going strong.

Thanks to many who commented on the blog publicly and privately. Thanks to new friends made via this BLOG. Great to have renewed some old friendships. Thanks to many e-mails from totally strangers who did not have anything to do with me other than passing comment or a word of appreciation.

Looking forward to comments, ideas, suggestions.

Cheers!

Anger
Topic: Quotable Quotes
"Eat a third and drink a third and leave the remaining third of your stomach empty. Then, when you get angry, there will be sufficient room for your rage."

by Babylonian Talmud

This quote serves two purposes - 1) helps in weight control 2) helps reduce ulcers / high BP from anger

Some people think 'eating' out the anger is not good. They think repression is not good. But, remember we are repressing what is not natural. By acting calm even when you are seething in anger you do not become a hypocrite because 'being angry' is very unlike you. So, by all means 'fake it till you make it' when it comes to suppressing negative emotions such as anger. When you are trying to manager anger, it may look phoney in the beginning because people can see you literally grinding your teeth. But, every actors acts awkwardly in the beginning. The same actor then delivers a Broadway performance. So are you....good luck in faking positive emotions when negative emotions are rocking you.

What is the antidote for the pain that follows when you repress negative emotions? If you look at that with some detachment, pain should not occur in the first place. If you are not able to manage that then some meditation or repeating your mantram may help.

As you may have made out by now, none of the above is any wisdom from me. But, it is from each and every holy scripture. Many greats have distilled the same truths over and over again.....

Cheers!

Shikar
Topic: Movies
Shikar - Hindi movie starring Shaheed Kapoor, Amrita Rao, Bips, Ajay Devgan etc.

Based on 'Wall street' starting Michael Douglas, Charlie Sheen etc.

Story line is week. In 'Wall street', story line was really strong and it was a good movie for any wannabe investment banker, stock broker or a professional. That movie did a good job of imparting some good finance that MBA students could benefit from if not anyone else....this Hindi movie version has a very week story line and hence it is not very effective...of course they could not have made Hindi movie on stock market manipulations as it would not have appealed to masses.

movie....2 stars....

Is insider trading illegal? No. Insider trading is not illegal. Trading based on insider information is.People tend to treat to both terms as same but there is huge difference between two. If insider trading were illegal, employees could not have been able to trade the stocks of their companies.

Cheers!

Phir Hera Pheri
Topic: Movies
If you enjoyed "Hera Pheri" starring Akshay Kumar, Suneil Shetty, Tabu and PAresh Rawal that came in 2000 (I guess), you will probably enjoy this flick.

Nice comedy. Dialogues and timing by Akki, Shetty and Rawal are superb. Very well directed. Was disappointed with recent Rawal comedy "Malamaal Lottery". This is NOT directed by Priyadarshan (original was). Not a real sequel.

Great cast.

Diya Mirza is 'zakkas' in the item number.

4 stars!

Cheers!

The mystery of Arafat by Danny Rubinstein.
Topic: Books....
The mystery of Arafat by Danny Rubinstein.

This is a nice biography of Yasser Arafat. Rubenstien writes in a very simple and lucid manner. Successfully traces Arafat's life in a concise manner without leaving any important details starting from the battle of Karameh to supporting Saddam Hussein after the occupation of Kuwait in 1990. It is commendable that author has managed to pack so much readable information in such a small book. One of the reasons is author seems to be very intimate with the subject and region.

All in all a great book if you like to read biographies.

Cheers!

Doomsday Gun
Topic: Movies
This is movie based on the life of Dr.Gerald Bull,an eminent Canadian scientist, whose life had to be terminated by parties interested.

Dr.Bull lead a very interesting life. No doubt! he was a very brilliant person. He helped US build HARP cannon in 1960s. He helped US, Israel and several NATO countries to meet their military objectives. After some time he started feeling that he was being juiced by all his benefactors but without helping him to achieve his life long dream. His lifelong dream was to build a huge cannon which can launch a projectile for very long distances only limited by the length of the barrel and ammunition used. He even argued that this super gun when built was going to be much cheaper to launch satellite etc. Even then people felt that Gerald Bull was only obsessed with his dream regardless of its practicality as it was fairly common knowledge that such a huge super gun which could not be moved around was a very poor choice for military purposes. Such huge gun was hard to hide and could not moved. It would be a sitting duck target for bombers. Also, it had limitation as each shot caused severe wear on the barrel.

But, even smart people become blind when life long dream gets into their head and has remained there for long time. When western powers discarded Bull, he looked at other places which could finance his super gun project. Saddam Hussein was ready with money. Saddam actually knew that Bull's super gun was really a bull. But, he proposed that he (Saddam) would fund Bull's project if he could help improvise Iraqi SCUDS for longer targets by modifying them. Bull was willing to do anything to get his pet project going. He worked to help Saddam improvise SCUDS. These modified SCUDS were rained by Saddam on Israel during first gulf war of 1991.

Many western powers and some mid east neighbors of Iraq such as Iran and Syria were becoming concerned. They warned Bull using many subtle and non-subtle means. When he did not yield, he was killed with few point blank gun shots to the back of his head at Brussels where he had relocated to pursue his projects. That's how a brilliant scientist was ruthlessly used and dumped.

Movie does a good job of giving a nice account of Bull's life. If you go by movie, US is shown is very good light where US secret service person (Kevin Spacey) does everything he could to disuade Bull but he would not listen. Same thing by Mossad and Britain's MI6.

It has not been established as who killed Bull. But needle of suspicion points towards Mossad more strongly than other intelligence agencies.

Belgian government was trying to reopen the case of his assassination after 16 years after coming across some new evidence. Search for Bull and Mossad and you will find info on the net.

This incidence also appears in many books that I read on Mossad. Again a 'kidon' job.

Cheers!
